Troubleshooting:
Clear aligners

In order to help us identify any difficulties you are having it is important that you can assist us in identifying the cause of the problem.

We have included what is likely to cause an issue with your clear alingers and what could happen if the problem is not corrected.

Please notify as soon as possible if you notice anything you are unsure about.

It is important to always wash your hands before – and ideally after handling your aligners.

Clear aligners need to be worn at least 22 hours a day and not to be worn when eating, drinking (other than cold water) or when you clean your teeth. It is important to ensure that aligners are fully seated for a few days before moving to the next aligner. If you lose an aligner, try moving to the next aligner and wearing it for a few extra days.

At various stages during treatment we may need to create small gaps between your teeth by polishing the enamel between the teeth where the gaps are needed.

The problems that can arise with clear aligners include:

  • Damaging an attachment on your tooth,

  • Not wearing your aligners sufficiently or moving to the next aligner too quickly, causing the aligners to fit poorly or not fit at all,

  • Not having the gaps between your teeth made at the appropriate time, causing your teeth to move in unwanted directions.

If you notice that your aligners are not fitting well or that teeth are not moving as expected, then please call us so we can check your tooth movement against what is expected to best monitor and manage your treatment.
